We were excited to see familiar faces shortlisted for this year’s BBC Green Sport Awards! Congratulations to Jessie Fleming and Sofie Junge Pedersen on their nominations for 'World Athlete of the Year' and to David Wheeler for 'Athlete of the Year.' These leaders showcase how football is at the forefront of making sport more sustainable and raising awareness of climate action.
Hosted in partnership with Sport Positive, the BBC Green Sport Awards bring together the most inspiring athletes and initiatives from across the industry to celebrate sport’s role in driving sustainability. With five categories, these awards highlight the individuals and organizations leading the way toward a greener future.
We’re proud to see FFF Climate Champions Jessie Fleming and Sofie Junge Pedersen nominated ‘Athlete of the Year’, following their work in launching a climate-focused initiative that has mobilised players worldwide to address the environmental impact of travel. With our support in collaboration with Common Goal, they’ve led a campaign that supports climate resilience and carbon offsetting projects, setting an an example for athletes to use their platforms to drive real climate action in sport.
David Wheeler, nominated for his "monumental impact" on sustainability in sport, has been a standout leader as the Professional Footballers’ Association’s “Sustainability Champion”. Known for openly challenging FIFA’s climate practices and representing players’ voices at events like Back of the Net Zero at Innovation Zero and UCL’s Green Pitch conference, Wheeler has also led Football For Future workshops to educate players on sustainability and is one of our Player Champions.
It’s fantastic to see these dedicated footballers recognized for their commitment to sustainability and positive impact within the sports world. It’s been a pleasure working with these athletes, and we look forward to what we can achieve together in 2025. Congratulations to all the nominees and the winners — more power to those using their voices for a better planet!
